File photo: Many people choose to tip a bit extra during the holidays. But if you can't, there are other ways to show your appreciation. With the holidays quickly approaching, it is customary for many patrons to provide an extra tip to show their gratitude to service providers who they regularly see throughout the year. But with lingering economic issues from the pandemic, one expert said consumers shouldn't feel the pressure to tip generously.
"A gift is never an obligation, it’s nice, a thoughtful act of kindness," she said."You gift what you can afford. You gift something that you feel is personal. If you know they like coffee you might get a gift card to their favorite coffee shop or bring them coffee or a mug. Let’s say it’s a nanny you might give them an extra week . The price point is irrelevant in terms of the thoughtfulness.
"Tipping is subjective," Gottsman said."If you don’t have a relationship with them, it depends on the service they provide and the relationship you share with them. We should not feel compelled to use that iPad out of guilt tipping. It’s much like a tip jar. If you don’t want to use it, walk in with cash."
