One Ohio-based company thinks the answer could be akin to something everybody has experienced in school.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Just like anyone, child care workers get sick, and sometimes they can’t go to work.that forces child care centers to turn away kids when they can’t meet mandated child-adult ratios on a given day, and send parents scrambling for help at the last minute.

“Licensed programs by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services have requirements and standards for the staff to be able to work in our facilities,” says Beth Kelley, executive director of Child Care for Akron Area YMCA. “So if we are a little short in a location, the simpler solution is to bring someone in from the outside to meet those requirements and fill the staffing gap.”

“We provide substitute teachers for centers in need,” says Gina Merlitti, general manager for Sunflower Childcare Substitutes. “We really want to make sure that we do everything we can to keep these vendors open for the perfect kiddos in the community.” Sunflower Childcare Substitutes has operated for just over a year and services 45 day care centers in Northeast Ohio, like Akron Area YMCA. The windfall in available child care during the onset of the pandemic inspired Brian and Jennifer Sprafka, also the owners of Small Hands Big Dreams Learning Centers in Northeast Ohio, to start the business.
