The death of Al Qaeda's leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in Afghanistan is widely considered to be the biggest blow to the terrorist group since the death of Osama bin Laden.
The 71-year-old played a major role in coordinating the September 11 attacks in 2001 when four aircraft were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center's twin towers, the Pentagon near Washington and a field in Pennsylvania, killing almost 3,000 people — the single deadliest terrorist attack in history.
He had also previously been indicted for his role in bombing the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed 224 people and wounded more than 5,000 others on August 7, 1998.Zawahiri has been the leader of Al Qaeda since 2011, and took over after its founder, Osama bin Laden, was killed by US forces in Pakistan that year.
Zawahiri also played a role in the 2004 train bombings in Madrid, and the 2005 transit bombings in London.
