He agrees that the war is likely to result in dramatic policy shifts in domestic politics, not least in the way the parties talk about Europe. However, die-hard Brexiters in places like his constituency are unlikely, in the near future, to be hearing anything that might scare the horses so far as the EU goes. “We’re not reopening the remain/leave question,” he says. “We’re talking about international alliances. I think there’s massive public sympathy [for Ukrainian refugees].
