Whooping cough cases are on the rise across Australia, prompting medical experts to encourage vaccinations for children. The increase in cases coincides with the short supply of a popular medication called Azithromycin, used to treat the illness. The federal health department reported an increasing number of whooping cough cases from the start of this year, with 7031 cases reported between January and May 2024.

“The immunity that we have dips down a bit, which means people are a bit susceptible, so then the bug can start to infect people and spread,” Professor Wood said. The federal health department and NSW Health also attributed the possible case increase to vaccination coverage and waning immunity. “Children and adolescents should get their pertussis vaccinations on time,” a NSW Health spokesperson said.
