WHSmith was the worst offender, according to HMRC, failing to pay around £1m to more than 17,500 workers. The retailer blamed this on a 'genuine error' related to company uniform policy in 2019 which was 'rectified immediately'.

It has also been reported Marks and Spencer denied more than £578,000 in wages to 5,363 staff.An HMRC investigation into minimum wage breaches found WHSmith was the worst offender

"Our minimum hourly pay has never been below the national minimum wage, it is currently above it and no colleagues were ever underpaid because of this."Marks & Spencer has blamed the minimum wage law breach on an "unintentional technical issue" from four years ago.
