When the sale began, it took just 130 seconds for the auctioneer to reach the $10 million price that secured the sale to Debbie Kepitis. But there is no rush for her to be on display to the public again. Kepitis watched her father Bob Ingham build a thoroughbred bloodstock empire with his brother Jack by keeping and breeding from their best mares, and she will look to replicate their success with the family of Winx.
The thoroughbred business is measured in minutes and seconds on the track, but extends to years and decades when it comes to breeding. The million-dollar prizes at stake on race day grab the headlines, but the right mare can make more as a mum than on the track.
