For many Black women, school picture day was one of their first experiences of race-based hair discrimination, which can happen as early as five years old.
Like learning the recorder and visiting that weird local museum, school picture day has been a tradition in British schools for generations.
Shockingly, new research by Dove has found that 42% of Black and mixed-race women with afro or textured hair have experienced this type of discrimination at school, with 84% saying they felt the need to alter their natural hairstyle at school. To raise awareness of this issue, Dove has launched Reclaiming School Picture Day – a new campaign that gives those Black and mixed-race women a chance to take a new picture, with their hair as they have chosen, reflecting their most authentic selves.
‘It’s taken me some time to get there but since then, I now embrace my afro and wear it unapologetically.”‘Be true to yourself,’ says Joana The new campaign includes an emotional film featuring eight affected women – including a school teacher and a foster carer – sharing their stories.Emma Dabiri is an author and activist who appears in the campaign. She said: ‘I think we still have a long way to go when it comes to understanding Black hair, how it grows and the significance of its difference when compared to European hair textures.
