Adelaide residents curious to know how a sperm whale ended up on the sands of Glenelg beach now have an answer to their question.
An area of a famous Australian beach has been taped off due to the presence of a sperm whale on the sands, with crowds gathering around to find out why it has ended up there.
Beachgoers watched on with interest from outside a taped-off area on Saturday as individuals dressed in head-to-toe protective clothing appeared to work on the whale. Social media lit up with questions as to whether the whale was real or not, with the Adelaide Festival then confirming it was in fact an installation for the event. The whale installation by Belgium-based group The Captain Boomer Collective is making its Australian debut after visits to places like London and Paris since 2008.
The beaching of a whale has always been a solemn yet captivating event. Whale is a gigantic metaphor of the disruption of our ecological system, embodying the feeling of disconnection between humans and nature. The game between fiction and reality comes to life on Glenelg Beach. The Adelaide Festival said the whale, which will remain for the rest of the long weekend, sends"a powerful statement about the environment and climate change".
"The beaching of a whale has always been a solemn event, serving as a gigantic metaphor for the disruption of our ecological system," he said.
