If one sport epitomises the Commonwealth Games, it’s lawn bowls – and Aaron Wilson is not your average lawn bowler | tomdecent
A boisterous home crowd roars with delight as you lock up the deciding match against Canada.B) Fling your shirt off, try to toss it into the crowd and whizz around the bowls green pumping the air with clenched fists?Aaron Wilson celebrates without a shirt on after his victory at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
The bloke who devoured spaghetti bolognese most mornings for breakfast in the Gold Coast athletes’ village four years ago says he is satisfied with the meal offerings in Birmingham ahead of his attempt to become the first player to win back-to-back men’s singles titles since England’s four-time gold medallist David Bryant.
Wilson makes a living from the sport and estimates he spends three or four months a year travelling the world competing. His favourite place to play is New Zealand, but the warm weather makes Australia a beauty of a place to sharpen a craft trickier than most might think. “It’s not your typical young bloke sport but my brothers got me into it nice and young and I really enjoyed it,” Wilson says. “I chose bowls and loved it ever since. I love competing at the best level.”
“You have to be training your fitness on the side,” Wilson says. “You don’t need to be superstar-fit but fit enough to play the game.
