Golf courses account for almost one in 10 Crown land parcels in Sydney despite declining participation in the sport,Open space in Sydney has hit the big time on the political agenda, with the appointment of Rob Stokes as Minister for Planning and Public Spaces last month, amid growing concern about population density and development., councils and communities are questioning the footprint of golf, which is played regularly by 2-3 per cent of the population.

The AusPlay survey by Sport Australia suggests 2 per cent of Sydneysiders play golf at least once a week, while almost 5 per cent play golf at least once a year. Participation rates are higher in regional NSW.
