Back in 2002, then Treasurer Peter Costello predicted the population would grow by about 30 per cent to more than 25 million people by 2042. But we reached that milestone four years ago - in less than half the time expected.
The latest intergenerational report, released by Treasurer Jim Chalmers this week, now says that Australia’s population will reach 40.5 million by 2063. But there are also doubts about whether that forecast will stand the test of time. Australia is getting bigger but no one wants to talk about it. While more workers are needed to support our ageing population and skilled migrants are in demand to boost the economy, the housing crisis has people worried about where everyone is going to live.
