“Many of the models I train tell me that they love boxing because it doesn’t feel like cardio.”
to Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn and Joan Smalls, today’s cover girls know how to throw a punch. An entirely different mood to Pilates – the workout so often linked to the supermodel body – boxing is an excellent way to release pent-up tension, get in the zone, boost mental health, and crucially, work every muscle group in the body.
“Boxing is an endurance sport, which is the easiest way to achieve a lean body,” says George Veness, co-founder ofin London and former England boxing team captain. “Throwing a punch involves a rotational movement, which comes from the feet and moves through the body, and it gives you a tight waist and core. Plus, this repeated motion uses a lot more muscle groups than you would use in a run or spinning class, for example.
Veness has trained many a model in his time, and touts boxing as one of the best ways to whip the body into unbelievable shape, whatever your goals. But it isn’t just about physical appearance. It’s a fun way to improve coordination, strength, mental resilience, mood, alertness, balance and posture – and the best part of all is that it doesn’t feel like a gruelling workout.“Many of the models I train tell me that they love boxing because it doesn’t feel like cardio,” agrees Veness.
The unwavering focus it encourages paves the way for the mind to move into “flow” state, which is the technical term for getting into the zone, or being 100 per cent present. “It’s where nothing else matters in life, but what you’re doing right now,” explains Veness. “At Jab, we talk about it a lot and design our programme to get you into that frame of mind.
