Liz Truss has been a serial victim of Westminster condescension and even scorn, but has repeatedly proven the doubters wrong. Can she ‘bulldoze’ them yet again?
| Until recently, the probable next prime minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, was known among the broader public largely for two things. Both of them involved fruit and veg., as the cabinet minister responsible for agriculture, at the 2014 Conservative Party conference.
But she has relentlessly ignored it and proved the patronising and patriarchal doubters wrong. She is Britain’s longest continuously serving cabinet minister, having had six jobs under three prime ministers. in Truss. The most recent poll of Conservative Party grassroots members suggests that she has a handsome lead over her rival, former chancellor Rishi Sunak.
Theresa May appointed him a junior minister in 2018, and he supported her ill-fated attempts to get a Brexit deal past hardline eurosceptic rebels. But when Johnson came to seize the crown, Sunak swung in behind him quickly and publicly. His slippers and coffee mug both cost more than the weekly amount by which he chopped welfare benefits. He had a second home in California. During a photo op to promote a fuel tax cut, he didn’t seem to know how to use his contactless card – and it also came out that he had borrowed a Kia to look more ordinary.
