A key employer group has warned against big business splintering off to make side deals with unions on industrial relations ahead of the upcoming jobs and skills summit.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned against big business splintering off to make side-deals with unions ahead of the upcoming jobs and skills summit, saying a united front was needed.
ACCI, the nation’s largest employer association, was effectively sidelined during industrial relations reform talks held by the Morrison government last year, when the big business lobby, with the Australian Council of Trade Unions to soften the BOOT for union agreements. “That breach of trust cut pretty deep last year when it was sprung on the working group and there’s been an effort by the [employer groups] to work together,” one employer group source said.In his speech on Wednesday, Mr McKellar will reveal ACCI’s attempt to bring together the BCA and Australia Industry Group on a “sensible and modest” joint proposal for industrial relations reform.
This time around, Mr McKellar said ACCI was seeking to put forward specific proposals where he believed consensus could be achieved. “Recent FWC decisions have distorted the intended application of the BOOT as set out in the Fair Work Act making it too inflexible and turning businesses and unions away from agreement making altogether.
To maximise the chances of success, Mr Morrison nominated several areas of IR, which all sides agreed were broken and in need of repair.
