Why Canada needs a curling summit to figure out the way back to Olympic glory Beijing2022 Olympics
It’s time for the powers that be in the game to sit down and truly examine how they want to proceed in terms of going after medals at events like the Winter Olympics and world championships.
While countries like Sweden, Great Britain, Switzerland, Norway and Italy are winning medals, Canadians are going home with very little.Article content, is all Canada has to show for three events at the Beijing Olympics. So many suggestions have been floated by curlers and stakeholders in recent years and they should all be examined during the next quadrennial, before the next Olympics, in Milan-Cortina, Italy.First off, Canada needs to play its Olympic trials sooner than it currently does every four years. The men’s and women’s trials were played in late November 2021 in order to determine teams for the Olympics in February 2022.
The trials should be held in September of the Olympic season at the very latest and it wouldn’t hurt to look at holding them in April or May of the previous season. Secondly, Canada needs to do more to support the elite teams in the country in their pursuit of Olympics and world championship glory, while still creating an opportunity for young teams to work their way into the high-performance arena. It seems unlikely this country will ever start selecting, centralizing and focusing on one or two teams, like other successful countries do, but it can do more to make sure its teams are training at the highest levels.
The idea is that those elite teams could be formed using any players in the country and wouldn’t have to adhere to provincial representation rules, making them better equipped to compete on the international stage.This would allow younger teams to compete at those traditional events, without being blocked by the elite teams in their own territories, and eventually work their way up to the high-performance level.
