Office perks are one of the reasons the Sydney-based graphic-design company is winning one of the crucial wars of business: the war for talent.
There’s another reason, and one that has consequences for Australian businesses that want young, clever and highly motivated employees. Canva is taking sides in a much broader conflict: the culture wars.
Today, led by the public service, professional services and technology, office life embraces progressive social values, including indigenous advancement, environmentalism and opposition to coal and gas. In candid moments, business leaders say they have no choice. Young staff want to feel work is doing good.over the past year, similar to most technology companies, it is still worth $US26 billion – or almost two News Corps., Zoom backdrops and pretty much any kind of graphical creation.
The number of Canvanauts, as they call themselves, recently hit 3100, up from about 1300 at the start of last year. One hundred and eighty positions are vacant.The human resources department, including the 100 staff responsible for hiring, are overseen by Jennie Rogerson, a 30-year-old who went from being a secretary to global head of people in three years.
“I love being in the office,” she says. “We don’t have strict rules on coming in. It’s not something we track. We just ask we know where you are for safety.”
