When a hermit on an isolated island told Geoff Crow about a lonely grave marker for a Japanese pearl diver 50 years ago, it started a passion to keep the memories of tragic strangers alive.

"I started talking to him and after a while he told me about a Japanese grave that was on the island." They discovered the vessel was a Thursday Island lugger named Shamrock, and the crew was fishing for trepang and trochus shell when they were caught in a cyclone on March 10, 1918. Mr Crow — who is no stranger to grief himself, having lost his wife and a son in tragic circumstances — said the creation of the memorial on Goold Island ignited a passion in him to ensure others who have died in tragic mishaps are not forgotten.
"There is a good three to four metres to fall and when they hit the water, they can't get back because of the oysters.""I thought I'd just take it upon myself to make sure nobody drowns," he said. "He just took it upon himself," Mr Zaro said, adding that he was happy the life preserver ring could potentially prevent another tragedy.
