Cathedral is back at Victory Field for the IHSAA Class 4A baseball state championship game Saturday against Penn.

Defense wins championships, but Cathedral's offense has carried it to Victory Field.

Switch-hitting junior shortstop Kyuss Gargett has emerged as Cathedral's top offensive threat. Gargett leads Cathedral in batting average , hits , triples , home runs and run scored . Gargett has multiple hits in three straight games and 11 hits in his past 10 games. Sophomore Virginia Tech commit catcher JT Stiner leads Cathedral with 30 RBIs and nine doubles. Sophomores Patrick Mazur and Carson Johnson are also talented run producers with 21 and 20 RBIs, respectively.

Cathedral's offense ticked up slightly during a 3-4-1 stretch averaging 5.5 runs per game. The offense started showing signs of life, and close wins over Mooresville, University and Columbus North sparked the offensive turnover. In their past 10 games, the Irish are averaging 7.9 runs per game. Cathedral's offense has caught fire recently, but its defense has been strong all season, especially up the middle. Gargett, Stiner and Johnson are all elite defenders.
