OPINION: The fate of the Perrottet government at the March election will resonate well beyond NSW.

Monday’s leadership vote for the West Australian parliamentary Liberal Party sounds more like a parody of the woes facing the Coalition across the country.

Some senior Liberals console themselves with the inevitability of the political wheel turning, particularly given the accelerated pace of change crashing into the tough demands of government. In 2007, the advent of the Rudd government completed what seemed an impregnable clean sweep for Labor in all states and federally. Labor’s triumphalism imploded spectacularly within a few short years. By 2014, the Coalition ran every government in Australia except for South Australia and the ACT.

Perrottet makes for an unlikely symbol of this given his strongly conservative factional background and with his ascension to premier coming only after the forced exit of the popular Gladys Berejiklian.

But the other drag on Perrottet’s ability to persuade voters his government remains their best bet is the continued failure of the NSW Liberal organisational wing to show it has learnt anything from the federal debacle in the state.
