According to a recent University of New South Wales survey, 54 per cent of people believe foreign student numbers should be limited, with support strongest among 18-to-34-year-olds.
Deputy vice chancellor Merlin Crossley suggested it could be based on the myth that international students steal places from locals. “We set a fair price and, we get a fair trade in the international market and that funds our universities. People may have a perception international students take places from domestic students. But that has never happened,” he told the Australian Financial Review . Manfred Mletsin, a spokesperson for the Council of International Students Australia, told news.com.
