The Maroons centre has no regrets about fighting with Matt Burton in the Origin decider.

Dane Gagai stood toe-to-toe with Matt Burton in the middle of a Suncorp Stadium field that felt like it was on fire, adrenaline coursing through his veins, and pulled the trigger with a right hand.

Even on a night where emotions ran high and tempers were frayed, which can be traced back to an early scuffle between the sides after Jarome Luai was seen standing over and yelling at a concussed Selwyn Cobbo, the sight of two players trading blows took almost everyone by surprise, especially Burton.

Gagai raced over and shoved Burton to the ground, before the two squared off. Gagai threw the first punch before a shocked Burton tried to respond, only to take a shot to the cheek before being caught in a headlock by Gagai’s Queensland compatriot Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.
