The West Australian government’s decision to crack down on travel for compassionate reasons under new ‘extreme risk’ border rules is causing mental torture, two leading paediatricians warn coronavirus travel borderwars

The West Australian government’s decision to crack down on travel for compassionate reasons under new ‘extreme risk’ border rules is causing mental torture, two leading paediatricians warn.

Renowned Perth paediatric cardiologist Luigi D’Orsogna said the restrictions would torment vulnerable people at the lowest points in their lives and cause long-term harm to their mental health. The cardiologist’s concerns have been echoed by paediatrician David Roberts, who believes the state is equipped to manage the health risk of an influx of NSW arrivals on compassionate grounds.

AMA president Mark Duncan-Smith said the union had not made any noise about the category because it still allowed for entry into the state under certain compassionate circumstances.“I think the confusion is that the category of compassionate grounds has been removed from the official language,” he said.
