Tom Sturridge explains Dream's more subdued look in TheSandman show vs. the comics: 'What Neil [Gaiman] said, which was so important, was that if Morpheus walks amongst the world, walks down the streets of New York, no one should bat an eyelid.'

Tom Sturridge explains why Dream will have a new look in Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman. The original series written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics is the stuff of mystical goth legend. It ran from 1989 to 1996 and follows the escape of Morpheus from his decades-long imprisonment and his attempts to right his wrongs and restore his kingdom. In the '90s, Warner Bros. planned a film adaptation that never came to fruition.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In the comics, Morpheus’ appearance immediately signals him as a supernatural being, with wild raven hair, black starry eyes, gaunt features, and paper white skin setting him apart in the series’ contemporary backdrop. In January 2021, much of The Sandman series cast was announced, including English actor Sturridge in the titular role.

As an enormous fan, the first thing I wanted to do was completely, literally recreate the Morpheus that’s on the page. And we did that, we did loads of camera tests, we painted my skin as white as an A4 piece of paper, I had black contacts with stars in them, I had huge, wild hair, and it was amazing.

It’s interesting to hear Sturridge discuss replicating the iconic Morpheus look so exactly, and the creators ultimately deciding to go a different direction. However, Gaiman’s reasoning behind the decision is crucial to the character’s central conflict. Though Morpheus is one of The Endless, his humanity and movement within the modern world are what drive his growth.

The actor’s comments should reassure viewers who were concerned about the show’s faithfulness to its wildly successful source material after seeing stills from the series ahead of its debut. After all, modern audiences are no strangers to questionable comic book-to-screen projects, and it’s always painful when a much-anticipated adaptation just doesn’t translate to the new medium.
