It’s a problem that’s blighting beaches all over the UK.
But if you want to vote with your wallet and migrate to another water supplier who shares your values, tough. You can’t switch. Your water company has a monopoly on the utility by virtue of your postcode. I’m not anti-privatisation wholesale, but privatising our water in the ’80s? Big mistake. Huge.water demand is expected to out-strip supply
. A solution? Reducing the amount of water we waste by among other things, fixing leaks. I had a leaky pipe last year . The fatigued plumber from Southern Water said he’d look at my stopcock. He did this, he said, because Southern Water lets a certain amount of water leakage slide. The pipe supplying my terraced house surpassed the threshold. It was leaking on average 198 litres per day. And it was only discovered because I challenged my water bill.
Imagine the combined literage of leaked water the water companies are ignoring – where is it running to? No wonder the system is overwhelmed. Who is paying for that leaked water? Who is paying for the time off work due to a ruptured spleen? Who pays for the beachfront businesses losing trade because the tourists don’t want to swim in our seas?
We’re paying for this shit with our health and our pockets, and the water companies and their shareholders are making us eat it too.
