It has long been considered a cheesy holiday for the elderly or families. But now, cruises have started to appeal to an unlikely cohort — people in their 20s.
Australia's largest cruise operator says it has seen a 20 per cent increase in passengers aged 18 to 35 since 2019.
The grandiose Queen Elizabeth cruise liner, with her gleaming chandeliers, art deco features and ballrooms, normally caters to a different demographic. The number of passengers in the 18 to 35 age group has increased 20 per cent since 2019, according to one the country's largest cruise companies, Carnival Australia, which owns P&O Cruises.
The surge in younger passengers has contributed to a remarkable turnaround for an industry that was in serious trouble after the COVID-19 pandemic. "Working 12 to 14 hours per day, seven days a week and for seven or eight months at a time, living in crowded cabins with other workers," she said.Despite the wave of bad publicity during the pandemic, it seems young people haven't been deterred.
