Houston Open's absence from 2023 fall schedule might bode well for future shift to spring

Jim Crane, right, whose Astros Golf Foundation presides over the Houston Open, joins his wife, Whitney, in celebrating the triumph of Tony Finau in last November's event. The Houston Open was nowhere to be found on the PGA Tour’s tentative 2023 fall schedule released Thursday by GolfChannel.com. But in the tournament's perfect world, that's not a bad thing.

Astros owner Jim Crane said after last year's tournament that the PGA knows he wants to return to the spring date Houston held for years through 2018 and that he has the resources to back that desire. If a switch were to happen as soon as 2024, Houston would not want a 2023 fall date because it could mean hosting the tournament twice within a six-month window.

“Our primary goal is to be one of the top events on the PGA Tour in the spring,” Kibbe added. “If that happens in 2024 great. If it’s ’25 or ’26, that’s fine too.”
