Former police officer Kerryn Mayne wanted her stories to ring true without being boring.
, who puts his head down and connects the dots without sliding into any scenes on his knees, two handguns drawn and shooting his way to victory.rush through a doorway in this fashion, free the hostages, take out the baddie and save the day, but we don’t. Largely because, although McClane can’t leave his house without tripping over such an incident, this sort of thing just doesn’t happen often . And we are only issued with one firearm.
I started writing because I needed a creative outlet after so long in the police force, and had an excellent idea to write about a female detective in the Melbourne suburbs, solving the sort of crimes that a police officer in the Melbourne suburbs would typically come across. It turns out, it was a book about myself as I was a female detective in the suburbs, investigating run-of-the-mill crimes and doing all the associated paperwork.
, I’d think instead of rushing into the ultimate scene in spectacular fashion. I was bogged down by my own rules, and they were categorically not making it fun. And this is how I shifted the focus from writing about the crime to writing about the people affected by crime. Focusing on survivors, witnesses and the front-seat passengers of various horrific things that happen and then just have to get on with it. There is so much strength in being the person who has to carry on despite the trauma and sometimes in spite of it. It’s the extraordinary meeting extra ordinary that I am most interested in.
