My fear for the future began in middle school when I noticed the stars in Iran — or rather, when I noticed that I couldn’t see any stars. The night sky I had looked to so often for comfort appeared clouded by pollution, obscuring almost every celestial body. I was shocked. The more I read about the problem, the more alarmed I became.
And so on a cold, wet day in November, I woke up at 5 a.m. to decorate a sign with the name of the activist group I belong to: Fridays for Future. To my parents’ dismay, instead of boarding the school bus to take my AP Economics quiz, I took an Uber to Folger Park in Washington, D.C. The park was brimming with journalists, but I brushed past them and approached a group of activists.
