Matt Damon's Jason Bourne differs from most big screen spies for his reluctance to kill anybody, but where did this no killing rule come from?
Jason Bourne only takes a life when he absolutely has to, but how did this no-kill rule come into effect? The Bourne Identity was expected to be a flop when it arrived in 2002, with the film suffering through a messy production and multiple release delays. Absolutely nobody expected it to revive the flagging genre, with its grounded aesthetic making it feel far more contemporary than the likes of Bond adventure Die Another Day.
In Jason Bourne, it was revealed that the character had 32 confirmed kills during his time with Operation Treadstone, but as he told Tommy Lee Jones' villain, he was trying to find a different way. He lived up to that vow in Supremacy, Ultimatum and Jason Bourne, often going out of his way to use non-lethal means to take down foes.
"I've never seen that in a big Hollywood movie before. The film ends with him trying to atone for killing a girl's parents in cold blood." For Damon, it comes down to not wanting to star in a movie "... that has a body count for the sake of just entertaining people." In the Bourne movies, Damon wanted the death of any character to have some weight and not just be purely for entertainment.
