The normally reserved Knights captain has spoken for the first time about his girlfriend and the effect she has had on his football.
For Kalyn Ponga, “life’s pretty easy” after lifting the Knights into the finals with a string of stirring performances.Ponga has previously been reluctant to speak about his personal life, but told this masthead how lucky he was to have girlfriend Gabrielle Peak in his corner.
Crossland said: “When they met, he was going through a tough time at the start of the year, and she’s definitely helped him there.” Ponga returned from a shoulder injury against Canberra last weekend and could not believe how well he came through the game. He will need painkilling injections for the game against the Warriors, and potentially for the next couple of weeks.
As for the Thurston similarities, Parr said: “It was great to see the scenes straight after the game last weekend when ‘Freddy’ [Brad Fittler] was trying to interview Kalyn, but he had to stop because of the roar from the crowd.“When I was at the Cowboys, Johnathan was a similar age to Kalyn when he started to embrace leadership a bit more.
