As the top elected official in our county, Judge Lina Hidalgo's inappropriate outburst...

during a recent Commissioners Court meeting, it was obvious it would garner attention. But the criticism that followed wouldn’t have been as severe had she simply apologized for her outburst, as Commissioner Tom Ramsey encouraged her to do.

Instead, Hidalgo proceeded as though nothing happened. It was only after realizing people did in fact care that she released a statement. “Women, and women in positions of power in particular, constantly navigate a world that expects them to be both strong and vulnerable, assertive but not aggressive,” it said. “Judge Hidalgo is not interested in dwelling on a passing remark that no man would be asked to justify.

Blaming sexism to excuse her poor behavior is not only inaccurate but it minimizes actual examples of sexism in the workplace. It’s also disrespectful to her colleagues to whom she directed the outburst and to the public that she is supposed to serve with the utmost integrity. Decorum should be expected of our elected officials regardless of gender, and for Judge Hidalgo to claim that her remarks would’ve gone ignored had they come from a man is provably false.
