Anthony Albanese must win Longman if he wants to be the next Prime Minister, political experts say.

Fruit growers in the marginal Queensland electorate of Longman are preparing for a third year of challenging conditions.

The seat is held by Liberal National MP Terry Young, a Drummond Golf shop franchisee who defeated Labor’s Susan Lamb in the 2019 election by a 3.3 per cent margin. “It’s been in Labor hands before, it’s only 3.3 per cent, and you’d expect after nine years of an incumbency there’d be a decent swing,” says Griffith University associate professor Paul Williams. It is highly likely Labor’s primary vote will increase across Queensland after a disastrous result in 2019, says Glenn Klefford, senior lecturer in political science at the University of Queensland.

“It appears that there are significant numbers of undecided voters in the electorate and there’s a level of volatility here,” Klefford says. Labor’s Fanning has campaigned hard on the federal government’s failings in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, while Young is this week campaigning alongside Defence Minister Peter Dutton on veterans’ issues.
