An affinity for food
Leong ended up studying economics at the University of Sydney, but found herself drawn to the humanities. “I should have done an arts degree. That was not on the table; my parents would never have let me do that. But 8am econometrics on a Friday morning at 18? It was brutal.” “My parents were like, ‘What are you doing? You’re meant to be getting a real job.’ But I was having a lot of fun. It wasn’t my forever job, but my mentality was, learn from this and see what happens. Say yes to opportunities; you’ll figure it out.” It’s an easier approach to pursue, she concedes, when you’re 20.
Opportunities followed, and Leong took them. A column on cheap eats for a free newspaper, a community radio gig, ghostwriting recipe books and more. It was enough, until it wasn’t. And then, Tasmania.The reset allowed Leong to figure out what she wanted, and part of that was a tweak in her philosophy. Instead of “why not?” she began to think “why not me?”That came about after a stint on SBS’which involved interviewing chefs from across the country on film.
