After being forced into international retirement in 2019, the veteran striker wants to make the most of her Paris campaign.

Michelle Heyman was a fan, sitting among the 75,000-strong crowd at Sydney’s Stadium Australia for the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final between the Matildas and England.

“I wanted to experience what those girls had just been through at the World Cup. Would I have loved to have been part of that team? A hundred per cent. Was it the right time? Definitely not. But I’m here today. “There was just a bit of bone floating around that needed a cleanout,” she explains. “Back then, the Matildas didn’t have enough information, didn’t have enough staff nor support to create a safe environment.

,” she says. “They thought my injury was career-ending because I was an older player. I was 30 at the time. “Her injury gave me an opportunity again within this team,” Heyman says. “It’s a weird sentence to say because, in 2010, it was the exact the same thing. She hurt her knee and I was called into camp. I found that article and I literally said, ‘I am sorry for Sam’s injury, but this is my opportunity and I have to take it’. Fourteen years later, the same thing has happened.”

More than 77,000 fans attended the match played on a cold Monday night. Three nights later, a similar crowd attended the opening match of the State of Origin series.
