There are many benefits to internet dating, but Fitzpatrick warns that finding a partner online can have drawbacks as well. “Getting matched by a dating website can be a great first step, but remember it’s just a first step,” she told. “Liking the same activities is not the same as being equally willing to work on building a relationship. That takes a lot more time to figure out.”

In her experience, Crumpton has also found this to be true. “The internet will give you proximity to a person to an extent but you never know how that’s going to translate physically,” she said. “If you want to really develop trust and actually get to know a person, the only way to do that is if you meet up in person as well.”
