New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has drawn criticism for taking two Boeing 757 planes with him to China, where he will meet with President Xi Jinping.

A second 757 New Zealand Royal Air Force accompanied Mr Hipkins’ delegation to Beijing on Sunday, in case the one he was travelling on experienced mechanical issues.

It added the fleet is about 30 years old and are nearing the"end of their economic lives" and are set to replaced by 2030. The move drew condemnation from New Zealand’s opposition parties, with National Party leader Christopher Luxon questioning the government’s climate change credentials. “It also speaks to concerns about the reliability of those aircraft breaking down as we’ve seen in past times.The leader of the ACT party, David Seymour, compared it to someone “driving a Ford Ranger 606 times the length of New Zealand”.
