At the beginning of The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon use Force Speed down a hallway, but why doesn’t Obi-Wan speed to save Qui-Gon from Maul?

In the first few minutes of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn and Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi sprint down a corridor in a split second to avoid blaster fire from droidekas — but why didn't Obi-Wan use Force Speed to save Qui-Gon from Darth Maul? This was the first live-action appearance of Force Speed, an ability that allows the user to move at impossible speeds using the Force.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While Force Speed has barely been seen in live-action since its debut, it has been featured heavily in Star Wars books and video games. Kyle Katarn, a Star Wars Legends character from the Jedi Knights series, was proficient in using Force Speed. When it comes to live-action, Force Speed is almost never used in the same way Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan used it in The Phantom Menace.

Not only was Obi-Wan tired toward the end of the battle, but Qui-Gon was as well. When Qui-Gon and Maul are separated by a force field, Qui-Gon kneels and rests for a moment—gathering what little strength he had left to try and finish off Maul. By contrast, Obi-Wan had just used Force Jump moments earlier after falling down a level in the Theed power generator.

Why Don’t More Jedi Use Force Speed? Despite Obi-Wan not being able to utilize Force Speed to save Qui-Gon, there are a plethora of other canon examples where Jedi could seemingly have solved their issues by simply being quicker. It’s possible the ability of Force Speed was lost during the Empire’s Jedi purge, given that the majority of canonical uses of Force Speed occur during the prequels. This would explain why Luke and Rey don’t use or rely on it.
