Brisbane’s next great urban renewal precinct - a stretch of riverfront set to house 10,000 people and the Olympic media centre - is tainted by chemical contamination.
Turning the Kurilpa Peninsula into a desirable inner-city precinct “like Newstead or Teneriffe” will be made more difficult due to the time and money needed to make former industrial sites safe to live on.
“Just like Teneriffe and Newstead have been turned from industrial and commercial areas into some of Brisbane’s most popular places to live and visit, I’m confident our changes will do similar for the Kurilpa precinct,” Schrinner said. Announced five years ago, the project was to have incorporated seven apartment buildings. But the land cannot be used for residential purposes until it is cleared, ecologically audited and verified as clear of contamination.Advertisement
“The presence of a site on the contaminated land register does not exclude it for residential development, but it does require that appropriate site investigations and remediation actions are undertaken to ensure that the land is made safe and fit for purpose,” she said. The Visy glass factory site, purchased by the government for $165 million and set to host the Olympic media centre, is in the same area. However, the department said the site had been investigated and was not on the register.
