Men who are married to British Queens do not become King, but they can hold the title of Prince Consort
will be unfamiliar to many, and might raise the question of why Prince Philip wasn’t similarly known as the King Consort. The title of Queen is reserved for the inherited female monarch, while, it is royal convention for the wife of a British monarch to be given the title Queen Consort.
It had been thought Camilla would be Princess Consort, as there have been negative perceptions over her affair with Prince Charles, and because of the incredible level of public adoration for his first wife, Princess Diana., the Queen said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla would be known as Queen Consort when the time came.
“As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.” Camilla is expected to be crowned at Charles’s side at his coronation, just as the last Queen Consort, the Queen Mother, was, and she is expected to wear the Queen Mother’s 1937 coronation crown.
As the wife of the King, Camilla is technically Her Majesty The Queen, but in their briefings and statements Buckingham Palace has kept to Queen Consort.
