The PM is expected to urge Biden to back Ben Wallace for the next head of Nato 🔴 But Diplomatic sources told theipaper Wallace could face a tricky battle as many Nato member states would prefer a woman and someone with experience of running a country
However, although Mr Wallace may have to overcome several hurdles, he is “highly regarded” in Nato, in particular for his handling of the Ukraine war, one source said.
Other candidates for the role include Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, who met Mr Biden in Washington DC on Monday, as well as Baltic candidates Ingrida Dimonyte, the Lithuanian Prime Minister, and Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas.Earlier this week, Mr Sunak“Ben does a fantastic job. He is a great Defence Secretary,” Mr Sunak said.
“This is a conversation that is happening amongst leaders around the world more generally and I’m sure it will continue to happen. “Ben is widely respected among his colleagues around the world. We’re one of the only countries that participates in every single Nato operation. We are widely perceived as a thought leader in Nato.
“And I think if you asked the Nato secretary general, he would agree with everything I’ve just said and we will always continue to be a strong contributor and participant in Nato.”
