River Phoenix turned down the role for a reason.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT River Phoenix played a young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but he didn’t return to the role for the TV series based on the character.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade chronicled Indy’s backstory, with the film showcasing one of the explorer’s earliest adventures. Phoenix was cast in the role of young Indy by George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg; the actor resembled Ford, so his casting fit, and it helped that Phoenix had also co-starred alongside Ford in The Mosquito Coast. Phoenix’s 13-year-old Indy was a Boy Scout who was already diving head-first into grand adventures.

River Phoenix Didn't Want To Be Typecast As A TV Actor The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles aired for two seasons, beginning in March 1992. However, Phoenix turned down the role of young Indiana Jones because he didn’t want to continue working in television . By that point in his career, Phoenix had been in multiple television series and didn’t see the point in going back — his movie career had taken off.

Phoenix wasn’t the only actor to not reprise his role as Indiana Jones in the TV series. Ford also didn’t have an interest in returning to the role — at least not for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. The actor was a big movie star, and he had little interest in working in television, though Ford did reprise his role as Indy in a season 2 episode of the series. Additionally, George Hall was cast as Indiana Jones at age 93.

How The Young Indiana Jones Would Have Been Different With River Phoenix While we'll never know what The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles would have been like had River Phoenix been cast, it’s possible he would have replicated the spirit of Ford’s portrayal more closely. It’s hard to imagine the series’ writing would have been wildly different, but it could be that Phoenix’s involvement would have altered certain aspects of the show’s portrayal of Indiana Jones.
