Four years after riding the Trump train, Ron DeSantis’s ambitions have grown. But so has the tension with the former president whose endorsement propelled him into the national spotlight | FarrahTomazin

: It was quintessential Donald Trump. There he was, three days before the US midterm elections, rallying the base in rural Pennsylvania for two embattled candidates, when he decided to troll a fellow Republican 1500 kilometres away.

For many other conservatives, however, it was yet another hint of Trump’s ego-driven political bastardy. Former president Donald Trump greets guests watching the midterm elections at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.DeSantis, on the other hand, couldn’t have had a better night. His 20-point victory margin was the largest for any Republican governor race in the state’s recent history.

“We have embraced freedom. We have maintained law and order. We have protected the rights of parents,” DeSantis declared in his victory speech on Tuesday night. “We will never surrender to the ‘woke’ mob. Florida is where ‘woke’ comes to die.” Adding to the tension is the fact that the governor has consistently come second to Trump in straw polls taken at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference , which bills itself as the biggest gathering of conservatives in the world, and often wins those polls outright if Trump is not included.

He was elected to Florida’s House of Representatives in 2012, and briefly ran for the US Senate in 2016 with the backing of the Tea Party when Rubio announced his bid for the presidential nomination that year. Trump, however, ended up winning. Last week, DeSantis released another ad, posted on Twitter by his wife Casey, this time depicting himself as a “fighter” sent by God to save his people.

Ron DeSantis turned a ‘swing state’ into ‘deep red territory’Ron DeSantis turned a ‘swing state’ into ‘deep red territory’Sky News host Chris Kenny says Florida Governor Ron DeSantis turned his “swing state” into “deep red territory” in next to no time. “DeSantis is a strong conservative, he tackles the elites and the media who all opposed him and he has been a leading light for a small government, personal freedom and responsibility response to the pandemic,” he said. “DeSantis is also strong on borders, strong on the basics of education – he ticks all the boxes for robust conservative governance, without the loopiness and personal abrasiveness of Trump. “He represents the future of the Republican party beyond the Trump incursion.”

Dr Jordan Peterson endorses ‘less divisive’ Ron DeSantis for White House tiltDr Jordan Peterson endorses ‘less divisive’ Ron DeSantis for White House tiltClinical psychologist Dr Jordan Peterson says he'd rather see the 'less divisive' Florida Governor Ron DeSantis step forward and run for the Oval Office over former president Donald Trump. Dr Peterson said Mr DeSantis possesses the best characteristics of Mr Trump – namely a 'forthright strength' – but is also a 'cautious administrator'. 'I think that would be better,' he told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan. 'Trump, for whatever virtues he might have ... I think that his behaviour in the political realm raises the political temperature to a dangerous degree. 'I say that while trying to give the devil this due and not casting careless aspersions on his name.'
