Samuel L. Jackson revealed why he hates method acting. 'You’re supposed to be able to safely come into this space, work and give emotionally, and not be harmed by it.'
Actor Samuel L. Jackson reveals why he doesn’t like method acting and has avoided using the technique throughout his lengthy career. Jackson made a name for himself in the 90s with movies like Pulp Fiction and Jungle Fever. Nowadays, audiences will be most familiar with his work as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Many acting practitioners suggest using method acting to approach performance. The technique has actors stay in character for the duration of a project to get a better emotional understanding of their character and, hopefully, give a better overall performance. This approach can be used to varying degrees so while some actors might only utilize this on set, others will spend long periods of time living solely as their character.
It’s a job of playing make-believe. You do it effectively and you do it in a way that’s not harmful to you because it’s a safe space. You’re supposed to be able to safely come into this space, work and give emotionally, and not be harmed by it. Well-known method actors like Daniel Day-Lewis disagree with Jackson’s ideology, as he’s managed to achieve three Oscars for Best Actor while employing the method. Although Jackson isn’t the only one who has a strong distaste for the practice.
Method acting has gotten itself a dicey reputation among some actors and audiences, including Jackson. When utilized properly, method acting can be an interesting way for actors to connect with their characters, however, it can hinder a performers’ overall experience. Despite never touching the technique, Jackson doesn’t have any trouble picking up new roles as he continues to collect impressive projects for his resume.
