Why Saying No Is Not What You Should Do This Year—And What To Say Instead:

Sometimes the answer is not a total NO—it’s just a “No, it’s not right for me.” In this case, you need to delegate this task after identifying the right person for it.Who has the capability to do this? Not as asked.

This is one that I seem to land on a lot. The answer is not NO full stop. It’s “No, I can’t do it that way, but I would like to do it. And here’s what I propose instead.”How does the ask need to be revised to make it a yes?Not ever. OK, so this really is a big fat NO, and it should only be deployed after you’ve considered the three alternatives I just listed. NO means it would never be a high enough priority for me to do it—whatever it is.If you come up with nil, you know the answer is “Not ever.” If you’re worried that this answer will have a negative impact on your relationship with the requester, you should evaluate the relationship.

Replacing NO with one of these subtly different yet impactful alternatives can help you maintain positive relationships, stay focused on what’s important and feel OK about not pursuing everything that comes your way. Saying NO doesn’t have to make you a naysayer if you weave these variations into your vocabulary. If you’ve committed to saying NO to more things in 2022, but those two letters feel awful, try these alternative solutions.
