The two leaders’ debates this week highlighted this question. The combative approach from both leaders on the Nine Network last Sunday was bad for both. On the Seven Network on Wednesday, in contrast, viewers declared Albanese the winner because they thought he spoke with more empathy. “He will not change – he will just get more arrogant, more out of touch, less trustworthy,” Albanese said.
The apparent calculation within the Morrison camp is that they need the circuit-breaker so badly they have to run the risk of the obvious rejoinder. But this is also concession that Labor’s key message about a “better future” is working.
