California's Central Valley will be under a red flag warning on Thursday and Friday, meaning warm temperatures, very low humidity, strong winds and dry conditions are expected to produce an increased risk of wildfire danger.

Coastal areas including theThe weather service’s Bay Area office issued a message about elevated fire concern on Thursday and Friday with dry and breezy weather in the forecast — but it’s not an official advisory.

“We haven’t issued an official product, but we have elevated concern,” said Brooke Bingaman, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Bay Area office. “We are near critical levels but not quite at critical levels.” Bingaman said the situation is less critical in the Bay Area, where grasses and vegetation have more moisture than in the Central Valley. “Some of our fuels are still green enough, and that’s part of why we’re not at critical levels yet,” she said. “Those winds are going to help dry the fuels more, which means we are leading into that time of year when we’re going to need to start thinking about preparedness for wildfires.

There is a risk for fire starts on Thursday into Friday given the combination of low humidity and gusty winds. Remember to properly disposes of matches, ensure campfires are put out, and don't let vehicle parts drag on the ground.
