People diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia can get 12 hours of deep slumber and wake up feeling as tired as ever.
Michelle Chadwick has an insatiable need for sleep. Despite getting a solid 12 to 15 hours of slumber each night, the 52-year-old never feels well-rested.
This feeling, known as “sleep inertia” or “sleep drunkenness”, never goes away, meaning she never feels fully awake and spends her days feeling disoriented, confused and irritable.Despite how tired she is during the day, Chadwick tries not to nap. Given how difficult it is for her to wake up from a snooze, and how long she can nap, she prefers to avoid them.
“Fronting up to work the next day, after not ringing in sick the day before, had me full of anxiety. And it happened a lot.”But the strain left her an emotional wreck. She resented the pressure of having to keep up with “normal” people and often felt angry and sad at her situation. Despite getting good-quality sleep, they experience sleep inertia and are also excessively sleepy during the day.According to Sleep Disorders Australia, IH is “quite rare” and its cause is not well understood.
