Menstrual health app Clue has this week kicked off a crowdfunding venture. Co-CEOs Audrey Tsang and Carrie Walter share the motivation behind this and what they intend to do with the money.

of venture capital funding going to all-female startups in 2022. By inviting its users to invest, Clue is not only empowering its community but also making a positive contribution to closing the gender investment gap.

“As women... there’s often more formality, more explaining, more bias to combat,” adds Audrey. “It has helped immensely doing this with a female co-CEO. Not only do we improve the gender balance of any pitch meeting, we can set the tone and normalize the female portions of the conversation.” “Men understand that this is a huge addressable market but they don’t know what they don’t know. Our users so often tell us that [Clue] ‘feels like it’s made by women’ and they love that. So, in a world where women spend a good deal more on healthcare than men - capture that market by backing companies that make products informed by the intuition of the people who use them.”

“Women’s health has historically been massively under-funded and under-researched, resulting in inadequate understanding and care of female bodies. There are so many very basic questions that we don’t know the answers to today, and that can only be answered with the kind of longitudinal cycle dataset that we are now starting to build, for the first time in history.”
