The 25-year-old Sydneysider was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s last year, but tumbled out in the first round this year.
Alex de Minaur’s shock first-round exit at Queen’s Club means he needs Novak Djokovic to withdraw from Wimbledon to have any chance of a top-eight seeding. However, de Minaur collapsed from a dominant one-set lead to suffer a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Italian rising star Lorenzo Musetti, who reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart last week.at the Queen’s club championships last year, but his early loss 12 months later will see him tumble at least two spots in the rankings.
His defeat to Musetti followed Russian world No.6 Andrey Rublev’s surprise first-round loss at Halle to American Marcos Giron. “I lost a tennis match,” de Minaur said afterwards, “sometimes it happens. If it didn’t tennis would be a very easy sport when you win every match you play. He did, though, win more points in the match and felt he had played well, just missed opportunities. Having gone into this match with nine wins in his last 10 matches he still feels in good fettle heading into Wimbledon, albeit with more practice time now than planned.Alexei Popyrin battled hard against five-time winner Andy Murray, but to the delight of a partisan crowd lost to the Briton 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in just under two hours.
